Description:

Im zweiten Weltkrieg werden die englischen Kriegsgefangenen eines japanischen Gefangenenlagers dazu gezwungen, mitten im Dschungel eine Eisenbahnbrücke über den Fluß Kwai zu bauen. Der typisch britische Offizier Nicholson (Alec Guiness) beschließt, den Bau als moralischen Sieg der britschen Überlegenheit zu feiern und fordert Höchstleistungen von seinen Leuten. Gleichzeitig beschließen jedoch die Allierten, die Brücke unabhängig davon zu zerstören.
